First earth, then outer space and now underwater. The new Aquatic division at maxon motor develop DC motor actuators, thrusters and systems for subsea use.
Focused on applications that require reliability and efficiency the new maxon subsea motors use BLDC (brushless DC motors) in pressure compensated oil filled housings. ROV and AUV applications will benefit from maxon motors’ lighter and more powerful new solutions including four new thruster sizes. The MT20, MT30, MT40 and MT70 can be used at depths to 6000 meters with their corresponding maxon pressure compensators. The maxon thrusters for AUV and ROV applications also have the ability to have the propeller geometry optimised for special requirements, or to use the standard propeller geometry that is most efficient in one direction and has approximately 80% in reverse thrust. External componentry of the thrusters are made from titanium or plastic for use in salt water and all parts have been isolated to prevent galvanic reactions.

maxon motors brushless DC subsea thruster and submersible actuators update.
maxon motor produce a range of underwater actuators and subsea thrusters for the oil and gas industry and general ROV applications. They utilise maxon brushless DC motors and planetary gearheads submerged in oil filled housings to achieve ground-breaking performance when used submerged in water. Three sizes have received updated performance levels. The 20, 30 and 40mm diameter units. The standard propellers are an effective compromise between high bollard thrust and high efficiency. maxon motor can also provide calculations for optimisation of the propeller thrust in each application. Starting with the 20mm thruster, it is fitted with a standard option 50mm diameter 3-blade propeller. It can produce peaks of over 2.5kg thrust and has a weight in air of 290g and 145g in water. The 30mm can produce over 5kg of thrust from an 80mm propeller weighing in at 450g in air and 262g in water. The 40mm with a 110mm propeller achieves over 11kg thrust peaks. All units are recommended for oil filling with Panolin HLP Synth 15 and are fitted with industry standard Subconn connectors. Pressure compensation is achieved vial optional compensation modules recommended for each thruster size.

High precision drives specialist, maxon motor introduces high-end solutions for underwater applications.
Today’s modern technology must be equipped to withstand extremely harsh conditions found deep in the ocean. These conditions often include high pressure and high oxidation levels. maxon motor as a world leader in drive systems has worked closely with research institutes and universities to provide solutions that meet the many demanding challenges for electrical and mechanical components required for underwater systems.
Electrical actuated underwater vehicles like ROVs (Remote Operated Vehicles) and AUVs (Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles) require drives which are light weight, highly efficient and compact design. maxon’s program of aquatic solutions offer these features and much more. The core element is a motor-gear combination based on a brushless DC-motor and a planetary gearhead. These underwater drives are designed with a high quality polymer housing to ensure protection against the harsh underwater elements.
maxon’s MT-30 thruster is pressure tolerant up to 6,000 meters with oil compensation. The propeller is modified for low noise operation. Other features include: Maximum bollard thrust of 10kgs, Voltage of 27 and weighs slightly over 900gms.

With the successful launch of the MT30 subsea ROV thruster from maxon motor, the drive specialist is expanding the range of ROV thruster sizes and submersible motors with pressure compensation vessels.
The MT30 subsea ROV thruster from maxon motor created a huge impression with 10Kg of bollard thrust from a 30mm diameter submersible brushless DC motor. Soon it will become just one option in the range of thrusters from the DC motor manufacturing marque. With a natural affinity suited to harsh application requirements the maxon range of heavy duty brushless motors (HD motors) were designed originally for use in down hole drilling rigs where extremely high shock, vibration and temperatures are experienced. The brushless HD motors in each power level have a version designed for submersion in oil. It is natural progression for the oil filled motors to be encased and pressure compensated for use submerged in seawater. This can be in the form of a thruster for underwater craft propulsion, an actuator for underwater instrumentation or a combined motor, gearhead and sensor feedback assembly totally sealed and pressure compensated for underwater tools and subsea valve control. The thruster sizes will range from 20mm through to 70mm diameter and will be available with the option of subcon connectors or custom cable (umbilical), compensators and control electronics.
