Focused on applications that require reliability and efficiency the new maxon subsea motors use BLDC (brushless DC motors) in pressure compensated oil filled housings. ROV and AUV applications will benefit from maxon motors’ lighter and more powerful new solutions including four new thruster sizes. The MT20, MT30, MT40 and MT70 can be used at depths to 6000 meters with their corresponding maxon pressure compensators. The maxon thrusters for AUV and ROV applications also have the ability to have the propeller geometry optimised for special requirements, or to use the standard propeller geometry that is most efficient in one direction and has approximately 80% in reverse thrust. External componentry of the thrusters are made from titanium or plastic for use in salt water and all parts have been isolated to prevent galvanic reactions.

Maxon motors new optimisation of the High Torque 52mm brushless motor gives even greater performance.
The EC-i 52mm brushless DC motor from maxon has had the iron-wound internal rotor motor redesigned from 7 pole pairs to 8 pole pairs. This significantly reduces the vibration and noise output of the DC motor. Available in three voltage outputs, 18, 24 and 48V the 52mm 180 W brushless DC motors produce up to 6,000 rpm.
With a correspondingly optimised magnet ring, the brushless EC-i motors with iron windings offer a very high torque density and a low cogging torque. The multi-pole internal rotor is extremely dynamic. It has a solid design, with a welded stainless steel flange and housing, making this brushless DC motor suitable for a wide range of applications such as rotary actuators, valves, robotic joints and process control.

Maxon actuators, DC motors, gearheads and encoders help to improve the handling and overall driving stability of a race car through rear wheel steering, with up to 3 degrees transfer per side.
A maxon supported Young Engineers Student project is developing mechatronics for steering the rear wheels of a race car. At the heart is a maxon spindle drive (linear actuator) that converts rotational movement into linear movement. Fitted with an EC-4 pole brushless DC motor to provide up to 200W of power, GP32 planetary gearhead for torque and two maxon EPOS2 position controllers with HEDL encoders to set the steer angle of the wheels. The maxon drive system is connected to the cars internal controls to calculate the desired steer angle.
The main issues for the engineers were lightweight, small components, with enough force to set the required steer angle and trustworthiness of the components to work reliably without fail.

Pictured below is a completely customised miniature electric linear actuator for positioning tasks. By combining a 16mm 60W 24V brushless DC motor with an integrated radial and axial thrust block bearing system, the shaft is then manufactured directly as a ball screw assembly. Despite the tiny dimensions available with motor diameters as low as 6mm the units can deliver high linear forces. This 16mm ball screw version delivered to an Australian customer this week has a force delivery capability of 403N. Combined with the brushless motors high speed capability having the ability to accelerate to 12,000rpm in under 2ms the actuator is also extremely dynamic. The motor is fitted with an integrated digital encoder for detent free smooth positioning. The length of the ball screw and the nut details are all configurable to suit the machine design requirements.
