Maxon DC motors are found in a massage system that fits to nearly any shower, converting your everyday shower into a wellness experience.
The focus of a Swiss company’s new massage brush system is designed as an overall experience incorporating massage for tired/ sore muscles, brushing away dead skin cells and supporting blood circulation. The system is a rotating brush that moves horizontally and vertically. It automatically travels up and down a rail, with the option to program a personal massage and using a remote control.
Battery operated, the brush rotation is powered by a maxon DC motor, A-max 32, combined with a planetary gearhead, GP32. For the system’s height adjustment, there is a brushed DC motor, DCX 22S, fitted to a GPX 22 planetary gearhead. The DCX combination motor and gearhead can be assembled online using maxon’s online configuration portal.
Overall, the conditions in a shower – steam, cleaning products, water and humidity – are no problem for maxon’s reliable DC motors and Planetary gearheads.

A Canadian company has developed a small robotic arm for industrial applications using brushless pancake motors, zero-backlash gearheads and encoders from maxon.
Introducing the Meca500: An Industrial Robotic Arm that is half the size of a regular industrial robot. Made by Mecademic in Canada and featuring brushless flat motors from maxon, the Arm has six degrees of freedom, weighs five kilos and spans a base around the size of your palm. With a repeatability of 0.005 millimeters, that is, 20 times less thicker than an A4 piece of paper, the Mecas500 has a load capacity of 500 grams.
Maxon’s brushless pancake motors were selected for this application. The EC45 flat brushless motors are renowned for their compact design, long lifespan, top quality and high torque. In the Meca500, the DC motors are combined with zero-backlash gearheads and high-resolution encoders for precise movements. The controller is integrated into the motor and gearhead combination, saving even more space and simplifying the drive operation.

Close inspection of the gear motor combination reveals the extent of motor customisations possible, normally for niche hand built servo motor and gearhead combinations that the Swiss engineers have become famous for.
Completely configured by the end user, maxon motors new micro DC motors system of online motor design and fully automated construction is set to change the future of motor manufacturing technology. Without human interference the tiniest of microdrives can be tailored to the application via an online tool. From the shaft length, diameter and flat features to the mounting method, gearhead reduction, winding characteristics, cable length and connector type. All direct from the motor design portal to the automated manufacturing line. Laser welded steel construction, dual stainless ball bearings and integral strain relief on a motor with only 6mm outer diameter beguiles Australian engineers. Over 17,000rpm at much lower noise levels than previously attained and torque levels to 200mNm make the new 6mm and 8mm servo gear motors incredibly power dense.
The ultra-small DC servo motors have linear control characteristics, zero magnetic detent (cogging) making them suitable for applications such as micro pumps, medical and laboratory dosing devices and robotics.

Maxon now offer more sizes in their sterilisable range of brushless DC motors, gearheads and an all new encoder.
Now available in a 13mm diameter is the brushless DC motor (ECX SPEED range) with accompanying planetary gearheads (GPX 13 SPEED) and the first of its kind sterilisable Encoder (ENX 13 EASY INT). All fully configurable, sterilisable and optimised for high speeds and low vibration output, making them perfect for demanding speed and positioning control tasks in surgical applications.
A stand-out feature of the sterilisable encoder is the chip used for generating the commutation signals in the Hall sensor version. When coupled with the brushless DC motor ECX SPEED 13 it facilitates extremely precise commutation and reduces heat. The encoder can be integrated within the motor to optimise costs and assists in applications with tight space restrictions. The DC motor combination can be configured online and ready to ship in 11 working days.

Maxon motors new optimisation of the High Torque 52mm brushless motor gives even greater performance.
The EC-i 52mm brushless DC motor from maxon has had the iron-wound internal rotor motor redesigned from 7 pole pairs to 8 pole pairs. This significantly reduces the vibration and noise output of the DC motor. Available in three voltage outputs, 18, 24 and 48V the 52mm 180 W brushless DC motors produce up to 6,000 rpm.
With a correspondingly optimised magnet ring, the brushless EC-i motors with iron windings offer a very high torque density and a low cogging torque. The multi-pole internal rotor is extremely dynamic. It has a solid design, with a welded stainless steel flange and housing, making this brushless DC motor suitable for a wide range of applications such as rotary actuators, valves, robotic joints and process control.

maxon motor have unveiled the first sterilisable encoder for brushless DC motors. This will create many opportunities for advances in medical technology.
The first steam sterilisable encoder has been released by maxon motor. The ENX EASY is available in two versions, as an incremental (1024 CPT) and an absolute version (4096 CPT). It can be integrated into suitable motors without increasing the length. The encoder has allowed maxon to create the first sterilisable drive system with brushless DC motor, gearhead and integrated encoder.
Ideal for demanding medical / surgical applications where speed and positioning control tasks are performed. Available with ball bearings or in a ceramic version. The encoder delivers high speeds, extremely precise commutation, low vibration and reduction of heat build-up. To optimise costs and space restrictions, the encoder is integrated in the brushless DC motor.

For applications requiring a DC micro motor that is robust, powerful and delivers high performance.
maxon have released two new brushed DC micro motors available in 6mm and 8mm diameter as part of their DCX range. The DC motors have a robust design with maximum power density from the high-performance neodymium magnets.
Also available are matching gearheads, the planetary gearhead 6mm and planetary gearhead 8mm, as well as two motor controllers, the ENX 6/8 OPT (optical) and ENX 6/8 MAG (magnetic). The matching planetary gearheads are welded directly to the motor and offer reduction ratios of up to 1000:1. Both are able to transmit short-term torques of 60 and 150 mNm respectively. The motor encoders are available in two versions for each diameter and work with voltages as low as 3V, therefore making them highly suitable for medical devices. The encoders come in a magnetic version and for magnetically sensitive applications, the optical encoder is available.
These micro motors are configurable online and available for dispatch in 11 working days from date order placed.

For applications withstanding tough environments particularly suited to defence, marine, aerospace, scientific research and oil & gas industries.
Excessive humidity, condensation and airborne pollution can cause corrosion, reduce surface resistance, and trigger metal migration. maxon’s new DC servo motor controller is not affected by these conditions, due to the polymer-coated circuit board. Even silicon or lubricant oils do not stick. The controller withstands ambient temperatures from -40 °C to +92 °C. The vibration and shock endurance comply with the high requirements of the Environmental Engineering Considerations & Laboratory Tests (MIL-STD 810F).
This results in a wide range of applications in fields like defence, marine, aerospace, scientific research, oil refineries and automotive systems.
Available to order online from May onwards, the DC motor controller is designed for both brushed and brushless (with Hall sensors) DC motors up to 400 W of continuous power and 750 W of peak power. The Servoamplifier has configurable digital and analogue inputs along with current limits and speed ramp settings.
