CSIRO Ocean and Atmosphere flagship overcome engineering challenges with the assistance of maxon DC motors.
Maxon DC motors provide controlled actuator movement where traditional mechanical linkages fail.
When a motor needs to run at the end of a 3000m long fiber optic cable you need to be assured of its quality, efficiency and reliability. This is why CSIRO engineer Matthew Sherlock turned to maxon motor for assistance when the existing mechanical linkages on their ocean floor core sampling device were shown to be unreliable. The RE range of DC motors are a “coreless” motor that do not use a laminated stack in the design. It uses the maxon rhombic winding that gives a zero cogging (no mechanical detent) motion for smooth actuation. The rhombic winding also provides the smallest possible air gap between the magnet and return because there is no overlap of the winding wires commonly seen in skew wound rotors. This combined with the lack of iron cores where eddy currents would normally form, gives the motor design the high efficiencies required for umbilical or battery applications. To achieve the required torque the motor is coupled with a planetary gearhead and to increase the efficiency and lifespan the gearhead is fitted with ceramic axles. Within the instrument the motors function is the close the sample tubes after it is lowered to the sea floor to collect soft substrate, capturing the sample for analysis at the surface.

Security locks that are activated by small brushed DC motors.
Spanish manufacturer of security doors, RL safe doors, have patented door locking technology that is operated by maxon brushed DC motors and gearheads. The specialist locking system locks a door both on the inside and outside, without the use of a key. To re-open the door from the inside the simple motion of pressing down on the handle activates the motor to unlock the door. The brushed DC motor and gearhead combination for each of the security doors provides up to 5W of power. Specifically chosen for the low interference and ironless winding the maxon motors have been in these specialist applications since 2002.

Scientific instrumentation applications and the use of brushless DC motors.
Maxon motor have released a Brushless DC motor suitable for use in ultra-high vacuum. The 22mm 24V brushless DC motor is unique in that it is an off-the-shelf solution for an application that traditionally requires high levels of customisation. The all stainless steel construction, SmCo magnet based brushless motor features very low outgassing and can be baked out at 240˚C. It is also vibration tested to MIL-STD810F. Scientific and vacuum applications for DC motors are extremely varied. An example being the Watt balance, a machine developed to compare masses with electrical values in a vacuum. Its purpose is to redefine the measure of a kilogram. In the past we have relied simply on a known set of platinum-iridium weights that have varied with one another over time. The Watt balance seeks to overcome this problem using Planck’s Constant to define the kilogram in terms of voltage and current. The vacuum capable motor has allowed scientists to build a 3-axis robot providing the necessary mass movements for the experiment.

maxon motor have released a 6mm micro linear positioning drive with internal gearing. It is available in metal and ceramic versions. Micro DC motor linear positioning systems are suitable for applications that require accurate positioning and high forces whilst maintaining minimal weight and a small footprint. For example: syringe pump actuation and lens or sensor adjustment in a production or laboratory environment. The linear speed, length and forces can be controlled and adjusted by combining a suitable brushed or brushless DC motor, encoder and motor drive electronics. Up to 11N continuous and 15N intermittently can be achieved with linear speeds of 25mm/s. The ceramic version gives high efficiency and longer lifespan whilst for less demanding applications the metal version is more cost effective. With a linear actuator, thrust bearing system and planetary gearhead in one assembly a weight of only 2.9g is possible, making the device also suitable for specialist robotic applications.

Brushless high speed DC motor with modifications for easy load assembly.
Press fitting is the most common method customers use to assemble loads and drive elements to the motor shaft in production environments. Especially if the application requires the use of a high speed DC motor. Whilst machining the motor shaft with a flat and using set screws to secure the drive element to the motor shaft is very common for small quantities, or low speed applications, high speed applications often require a more balanced solution. The higher the speed and acceleration requirements of the motor, the higher the required strength for this affixation and so increases the press fit force. It is here that many high speed motor manufacturers let down their customers with a very simple omission; access to the rear shaft of the motor. Without this simple feature, customers press fitting onto the motor shaft with the required force for high speeds, often need to exert more force than the bearing system of the motor can withstand. This process in turn causes micro damage to the balls within the bearing system reducing the lifespan of the motor. The motor pictured in this example is a 25mm 250w high speed brushless DC motor with the ability to accelerate to 62,200rpm in 2.32ms. For this example the motor has been manufactured with a pilot hole in the rear cover allowing support of the shaft for the pressing process. The motors drive shaft end has also been manufactured with a tolerance to match the load bore and a shoulder to locate the end travel in the pressing process.
