Brushless DC motor customisation example for IP rated brushless DC motors.
This example of a low voltage brushless DC motor was recently delivered to a customer requiring an extremely robust motor for a drilling tool application. It demonstrates maxon motors ability to manufacture complex motor drive solutions for Australian customers with high quality and minimal lead times. The brushless motor pictured here is a heavily modified version of the 45mm 250W 24V catalogue brushless motor. The entire rear section of the motor has been modified to meet the exact dimensional requirements of the application. The catalogue version of this motor has a radial cable exit and a radial extension of the cable glands. This radial cable exit can interfere in applications where the motor needs to be fitted inside a pipe or other round tube type space. maxon was able to produce drawings of the modified design in two days and after customer approval the motors were manufactured and delivered in four weeks. The motors rear cable housing, gland and sealing were not the only modifications that were carried out. The drilling application sees the motor sprayed with high pressure jets of water. To protect against this the front motor bearing was fitted with rubber seals. To keep the electronic components and motor speed control unit well away from the harsh environment the cables also needed to be manufactured with a specific length, connection and shielding.
