This very small brushless DC motor is the latest example of miniature motor modification capabilities supplied by maxon motor Australia. It is only on close inspection of the image you begin to understand the scale of the modifications and the quality of the brushless motor and gearhead construction.
This servo motor system is comprised of an 8mm diameter 2w 24V Brushless DC motor with a maximum speed of up to 80,000rpm. It is assembled with an 8mm diameter planetary gearhead with a reduction ratio of 16:1. Visible on the gearmotor is the continuous flow laser welding construction that provides unparalleled strength and manufacturing repeatability. The output shaft of the gearbox is completely customised to suit the robotic gripper application. The shaft was specified at 20mm long with 0.2mm of material removal for the flat and very fine run-out tolerances. The specification process for a small DC servo motors such as this, with high levels of motor modifications can often require many of the standard DC motor features to also be re-engineered to accommodate them. For example if a servo motor or gearhead is specified with a long shaft the radial loads, bearing system, mounting system and the motors integration into the machine all may need re-evaluation.
