Could brushless DC motors build themselves?
All this talk about artificial intelligence, swarm technology and autonomous systems poses the question – Could a robot make itself? As reality often follows science fiction any fan of Terminator or Transformers has already thought about it, but what they may not realise is, …..it has already started.
It is starting at a component level. As I walk around the maxon motor factory in Switzerland I see much of the manufacturing equipment like robotic arms, actuators, rotary stages, test equipment and so on are often custom designed machines full of maxon motors. -motors making motors-. But it goes even further. Modern warehousing systems that contain fully autonomous vehicles that can obey traffic rules and calculate the fastest, least congested route are also driven by maxon brushless DC motors. -motors getting the parts to build motors with motors-! The latest manufacturing systems feature direct communications with customers via online portals. All we need now is an assistant robot or software or both to interact with the portal and we have gone full circle. And I will probably be out of a job 🙂
